Aurora Police Department apprehends fugitive following hours-long standoff

Suspect taken into custody without incident, residents advised to remain vigilant

On Tuesday, August 16, 2023, the Aurora Police Department (APD) successfully apprehended a wanted suspect in northwest Aurora after a tense standoff that prompted a shelter-in-place order for nearby residents.

The incident began at approximately 1 p.m. when APD officers attempted to serve an arrest warrant at a residence in the 1300 block of North Oswego Street. The suspect, identified as 32-year-old Nicholas Anderson, fled into the house and refused to come out.

APD officers established a perimeter around the residence and called for backup, including the SWAT team. A shelter-in-place order was issued for residents within a one-block radius of the home.

After several hours of negotiation, the SWAT team entered the residence and took Anderson into custody without incident. No injuries were reported during the operation.

Anderson was wanted on several felony warrants, including assault, burglary, and possession of a controlled substance. He was transported to the Arapahoe County Jail, where he is being held without bond.

APD Chief Vanessa Wilson praised the officers involved in the operation for their professionalism and dedication.

"This was a dangerous situation that could have easily escalated," Wilson said. "Our officers acted quickly and decisively to apprehend the suspect and ensure the safety of the community."

The shelter-in-place order was lifted at approximately 6 p.m. Residents were advised to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity to the police.
