Wheelchair Basketball Star Steve Serio Sets His Sights on Paris 2024

The Paralympian and Team USA Captain is gearing up for his fifth Paralympic Games.

Serio has been a key player on the U.S. wheelchair basketball team for over a decade, and he is one of the most decorated Paralympic athletes in the history of the sport.

Steve Serio, one of the most decorated Paralympic wheelchair basketball athletes in history, is preparing for his fifth Paralympic Games in Paris in 2024. Serio, who has been a key player on the U.S. wheelchair basketball team for over a decade, is aiming to lead his team to a gold medal in Paris.

Serio's wheelchair basketball journey began at the age of 12, when he was diagnosed with osteosarcoma, a type of bone cancer, and had his right leg amputated above the knee. He quickly discovered a passion for wheelchair basketball and began playing competitively. In 2008, he made his Paralympic debut as a member of the U.S. team that won a bronze medal in Beijing.

Since then, Serio has helped lead the U.S. team to two gold medals (London 2012 and Rio 2016) and one silver medal (Tokyo 2020). He has also been named the Paralympic Athlete of the Year by the United States Olympic & Paralympic Committee twice (2012 and 2016).
